September
Deer and other critters are probably very hungry at this point, and you green plants are looking like Filet Mignon to them…even “Deer Resistant” plants will be chewed to the ground during extended droughts. Deer netting may be effective in some cases, but the two best solutions are a big dog or just some sympathy for their situation. Planting “smelly” plants such as Artemisia, Rosemary, and Oregano in groups throughout shrub beds will make your landscape less attractive to hungry deer (placing moth balls in shrub beds may also help, old timers hang bar soap from branches to irritate deer).
Spray perennials with “Super Bloom” to provide final growth/flowering flush of the year.
Cut - off time for planting perennials is at the end of September, plants installed after this date may not make it through the winter.
